BIOGRAPHY

ev. Walter S Long was born November 11, 1863 in Washington County Maryland, near Hagerstown, was elected to the ministry May 21, 1892; advanced to the eldership in 1898; and was united in marriage with Alice E. Coffman (Samual & Susan (Smith) Coffman) February 17,1886; died May 29, 1953 at Altoona Pennsylvania. Walter S. Long was the son of Elder David Long, b. January 29, 1820 in Washington County, Maryland, d. January 23, 1897, and Mary Reichard, d. 1889, daughter of Daniel Balsbach Reichard. Elder David Long for may years was a bishop of the church, at which was known as the Manor church.

When Walter S. Long first came to Pennsylvania he was not in the ministry, but was engaged in peach culture.

Rev. Long entered the ministry in 1892, and was first located in Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County. In 1897 he located in Tyrone and assumed the pastorate of the church there, then a mission. In 1900 he moved to Philadelphia, first serving the First Church of the Brethren at Carlisle and Dauphin streets, then the church at Germantown, the oldest Brethren Church in America. From there he came to Altoona in 1904.

Family Background

alter S. Long was the son of Elder David Long, b. January 29, 1820 in Washington County, Maryland, d. January 23, 1897, and Mary Reichard, d. 1889, daughter of Daniel Balsbach Reichard. Elder David Long for may years was a bishop of the church, at which was known as the Manor church.

The David Long farm is located near the Antietum battlefield. David Long is the son of Joseph and Nancy Roland Long, the grandson of Isaac Long, d. 1787, a member of the River Brethren, Brethren in Christ.

There were twelve children born to David and Mary Long, eleven reached maturity. Four of the sons became ministers, Rev. J. A. Long, York Pennsylvania, Rev. D. V. Long of near Hagerstown, Rev. Orville Long of California, and the subject of this sketch. Three of the daughters were married to ministers.

In 1880, D. Melvin Long, b. 1846, d. 1911, along with his father bought the "Hagerstown Select School" and reorganized it as the "Linden Seminary".

Ministerial Chronology

ev. Walter S Long first came to Pennsylvania as an nurseryman engaged in peach culture. It was at the church at Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, that he was elected to the ministry, May 21, 1892. His Father, Elder David Long conducted the installation. While serving with this church he was instrumental in organizing a Sunday school in German Valley, this being the pioneer Sunday school of the Church of the Brethren at that point. At his next point of service in 1898, he advanced to the eldership.
